Thank god for Michelle Casillas. I've been a fan of her band Ursa Minor (which also features Rob Jost on bass) for years, and was thrilled to have her be a part of our record. She lent us her song Revival, and I arranged it for the wolf face ensemble.
Jeff's brushes are playing in time with Rob on acoustic bass, but Rob is changing chords with Michelle's guitar. The effect is motion and misdirection but with roots. During the two 'blowing' sections the rhythm section tightens up, and you can hear my processed trumpet solo over the top.
I've always like the idea of a horn player adding touches like a rhythm guitarist, not just being in the lead as a soloist or in the background with a horn section. I used a microsynth to take isolate the low/mid frequencies, making the sound sort of round and hollowed, and then shifted it up an octave so it could ride on top of all the lush guitars and bass.
